Gifts with Meaning

The general perception of bears is they are cute and cuddly. Yes, they could be dangerous and could possibly kill you in a brutal attack but we still think they are warm and adorable creatures which they really are if we are not so stupid to provoke them.

But of course we know that and the general perception that the bears are big snuggly animals that’s nice to hug is still intact. This goes to explain the dozens of teddy bear soft toys in our bedroom. We love teddy bears. We can’t resist them. We buy teddy merchandises. We longed for the big huge life size teddy by the shop window of Memory Lane.

You know, i’m extremely tired and barely able to get up today. The boyfriend and i spent the night going through animalasia.org looking at photos after photos of the poor adorable moon bears.

Have you heard of the Moon Bears plight? It’s been going on since 1995 and i am surprise at myself for not being aware of it (being the self professed animal lover and all). I actually came across the founder’s blog long before when i was reading about the culling of dogs in China but didn’t have the guts to go though the posts afraid i might bawl like a baby (because i’m a champion cry baby). I really did not need another sad story in my conciseness that day.

However, last night the boyfriend was telling me the horrible stories of how moon bears’ bile are being harvest for the use of traditional Chinese medicine. I’ve got to read it and see the photos for myself and when i did i couldn’t begin to tell you how it affected me.

I read of  how cruel the bears are treated – being incarcerated (some since baby) in cages too small that they could not move for years and years, how the confinement caused stunted growth in some cases, how the dirty catheters inserted to extract bile in their abdomen gets infected and causes multiple organ failures which the bear have to endure for years till they die, how their paws are chopped off to prevent them from scratching out the catheters, how diseased the bears have become which made them blind, brain damaged, violent even. Bears in painful custom metal jackets designed to protect the dirty latex contraption for extraction of bile.

How could someone be so cruel?  Do they not have a conscious?

Come on, look at them!

The boyfriend and i gave a small donation for the cause last night and i felt better that we did something. We decided to sponsor a bear next year after the pay raise. It’ll be about USD45 (approx. RM154) per month which is a bit costly but we are thinking about it or at least we’ll befriend a bear for a mere USD80 (approx. RM274) per year. It’s really cool because you get annual photos and updates on your bear. It’s like owning one.

Going through the website again today i found a page at the Gift Shop where you can choose specific gifts for the bears such as food (pots of honey, tub of raisins, fruit baskets), toys (hammock, swings, etc)  and medical services (vet care, health check, etc).

It’s really sweet actually and i think i’ll buy a pot of honey for a special bear this Christmas. It just cost USD8.00 per pot to make a bear happy for the festive season. Plus they’ll send you a nice card. It’ll do as a nice and thoughtful gift to someone to be donated on behalf on and it’ll be a great way to educate the kids.

By the way, if you’re wondering, this is not a paid post or anything. I’m just really passionate about animals. Although not passionate enough to be an activist but i like to do my part. I believe that if you have the means then you should give some to charity, if not for animals then for other unfortunate souls out there.

Knowing that, i think i could sleep a bit better tonight.

Going Down Memory Lane

Hello there. I’ve been ignoring this blog yet again *haha no surprise there. 2009 have been a busy year… I know it’s like just 2 months into 2009 but i’ve been so caught up with the continuous festive season and cleaning and other work that i have no time to even sit down for a sip of coffee.

I’ve been a bad girl lately. Started emo-ing and stuff. And not blogging enough. I’ve written a rubbish, short post for New Year. Didn’t even bother to write down my reflection and resolution for this year. Now we’re going to celebrate Chinese New Year already! Gosh, time passes really quickly when you’re busy!

Anyways, Chinese New Year is still new year right? It’s a new beginning for Chinese people so to make up for my terrible New Year post, i’m going to do some reflection on my life in 2008 before CNY.

1) Jan 08 – Mug Mug came into my life.
My first pet dog ever. She wondered into my kitchen one morning and life had never been the same. I never knew i’m such a dog lover :).

Then she went missing and all of us were heart broken. I still miss her and i have a habit of looking around the neighborhood to see if i can spot her, even now.

2) Feb 08 – Went backpacking in Hanoi and Halong Bay, Vietnam.

My first experience backpacking was in Hanoi. It was indeed a great experience, among others, trapped in the winter with just a flimsy jacket, getting lost in the small town, aboard a luxury chartered junk by accident and almost peeing in the street.

I’m more of a travel junky now!

3) Feb 08 – Kobe and Pou Pou came into my life

It was the best day of my life when blurryhunniee brought Kobe back home! All of us fell in love with her. She’s the most adorable yet mischievous puppy i’ve ever seen. 1 year from then, she’s still as mischievous as ever! Haha.

Then we brought Pou Pou (the neighbourhood stray) to live with us coz she had been getting too attached to us.

Having Kobe and Pou Pou around the house is life changing. Somehow they brought our family closer and i love them so much for that. That and because they’re super manja -_-”.

4) March 08 – Played surrogate owner to Cotton & Candy.

Found 2 pups on the street that we later named Cotton and Candy. It felt good when we finally found a new home for them. Though giving them away to a new owners was pretty difficult coz we grew so attached to them. Maybe this is a starting point for opening an animal shelter? LOL Just kidding.

5) March 08 – I voted for the first time.

I made my mark in history. Ok… not so kua cheong. I cast my vote the the 2008 Malaysia’s General Election which led to a landslide win by the opposition party. I think it’s one of the most memorable and dramatic election in Malaysia.

Oh, i’ll never forget when Samy Blue went down! Yee haa!

6) Apr 08 – Google slapped me with a Page Rank 0.

That’s the end to my online money making. I’m still suffering. Grrr…

7) May 08 – First time in Chinese Med Therapy.

Mr. Bf finally and successfully coerce me into visiting the doctor for my always bloating stomach and lethargy. A Chinese medical practitioner at that!

herbal_medicine

I ended up with the worst diarrhea in my life! After few visits and parting with few hundred bucks, i gave up. The med was terribly bitter but it still didn’t cure my sickness.

8) June 08 – We picked up Doodle.

doodle is a poser

Which is a puppy we stumbled upon in front of the pet shop. We rescued her and she went for some serious surgeries to correct her fractured bones. Alas, there were none who were willing to take her in because has a limp. Now she’s our pet and playmates to Kobe and Pou Pou :).

9) Apr 08 – Finally reached
quarter life crisis
.

I admit i’m afraid of getting old. But as of last year i’ve been getting really scared and worried of the aging issue. I’ve started to reflect on my achivements which i’m not so proud of. Plus started to worry about my phisical appearance and health.I’ve since then start exercising more and slapping all type of creams on my skin in hope to delay the wrinkle process.

Currently still on the fight!

10) Apr 08 – First time winning Nuffnang contest.

MDGCONTEST

Woo hoo! I love winning contests. Not because of the prize (contests in Malaysia ain’t won win us anything much anyways), but for the adrenaline kick. Yeah, i won RM100 from the Nuffnang’s MDG contest and it was great. Makes me think i’m lucky enough to hit the jackpot next time.

Why not? I won and you didn’t right? So i’m luckier than you right? *wakaka!

11) July 08 – Started a Food Blog and Travel Blog.

Finally found the time to start a travel blog and bought a new domain for my food blog. IIn those blog i document my trail in KL looking for delicious food and my travel stories. It’s a hobby which is kind of obvious coz i update those 2 blogs more than this one *wakaka!

I love my food and travel blog to pieces. Since i start writing them, i had gone fatter and is obsessed with travelling. Errrmmm… that doesn’t sound too good.

12) Aug 08 – Met the parents.

Met Mr. Bf’s parents for the very first time. I know we’ve been together for quite some time but i try to delay this meeting as long as i can. Well, i did at last meet them and i survived. Phew! Nerve wrecking!

13) Nov 08 – Suspected to have thyroid.

I’ve been having abnormal spotting/bleeding after menstruation and that got me worried. Mr. Bf dragged me to pay a visit to the gynae and i did. I swear she’s the worst doctor ever. She did not listen to me, scolded me and did not care to explain anything. Worst of all she gave me the wrong information and refuse to give me an ultrasound. Upon her own speculation, she suspected i have thyroid. I had nightmare waiting for the result. I almost went crazy. It turned out i do not have thyroid afterall.

She also gave me a packet of anti-pregnancy pills which was supposed to stabilize my hormone. What it did was made me suffer from migraine, mood swings and serious insomnia. Stupid woman!

14) Dec 08 – I have ovarian cyst.

I’ve not blog about this before but i went for a second opinion since my first visit to the gynae was a disaster. I went to Dr. Wong at Hartamas. He’s from Pantai and he did an ultrasound. Apparently i have quite alot of cyst in my ovary. If i’m not mistaken, the condition is called ‘graafian follicle cyst’. It means i’m not releasing my eggs *wtf hahahahahahaha

Since it’s only benign, i do not have to go to surgery yet. I’m on medication still. Taking the med is a pain because it causes water retention. My body gets so bloated someday, i could weight additional 2kg or more!

Going for checkup once i finish 2 months medication. That’s on March. Fingers cross.

Phew! Seems like alot of stuff went on in 2008. No matter what, 2008 was a memorable year full of ups and down. It wasn’t the best year. I hope 2009 will be a better and greater year with many more happy endings.

Now i have to go back to CNY preparations!

Say No to Appetite for Dog’s Meat

This is why i bring a long plastic pipe-like-stick and look like a shepherd attending her flocks when i walk my dogs. My hawk eye mode turned on, keeping a sharp watch on any who dare to stray away and especially keeping an eye on drooling wolves from the forbidden land where eating dog meat is fun and gamely. My sharpened claw ready to pounce.

Risky DietDog-eating, says Dr Vellayan, has crept into Malaysia from countries such as Vietnam and China.

Going Against The GrainThat code words such as “hot dog” and sam lok are used when ordering dog meat points to the fact that eating dogs is frowned upon in our society.

Appetite for Dog’s MeatMany dogs are subjected to a cruel, slow death due to the superstitious belief that the more the animal suffers, the better the meat tastes.

These people should be hanged and revived and then hanged and then revived and hanged again. I have nothing against other countries’ culture or practices… even when it comes to food but WTF?! Not here in Malaysia ok… -_-”
