Stain and Poison

Watching these 2 short clip really broke my heart and made me teared up.

Raise awareness. Save the moon bears… use alternative medicine!

Stain – the title of the first 60-second announcement, produced in Mandarin and English, likens the intelligence of moon bears to that of a child and calls for empathy from viewers to support Animals Asia in their campaign to end bear farming. This message is intended to raise awareness of the plight of these beautiful bears, and will be distributed across Asia.

Poison – this second announcement is targeted at users that consume bear bile and highlights the potential health risks of taking bile that is contaminated. This has also been produced in Mandarin and English and has already been launched in China.

Gifts with Meaning

The general perception of bears is they are cute and cuddly. Yes, they could be dangerous and could possibly kill you in a brutal attack but we still think they are warm and adorable creatures which they really are if we are not so stupid to provoke them.

But of course we know that and the general perception that the bears are big snuggly animals that’s nice to hug is still intact. This goes to explain the dozens of teddy bear soft toys in our bedroom. We love teddy bears. We can’t resist them. We buy teddy merchandises. We longed for the big huge life size teddy by the shop window of Memory Lane.

You know, i’m extremely tired and barely able to get up today. The boyfriend and i spent the night going through animalasia.org looking at photos after photos of the poor adorable moon bears.

Have you heard of the Moon Bears plight? It’s been going on since 1995 and i am surprise at myself for not being aware of it (being the self professed animal lover and all). I actually came across the founder’s blog long before when i was reading about the culling of dogs in China but didn’t have the guts to go though the posts afraid i might bawl like a baby (because i’m a champion cry baby). I really did not need another sad story in my conciseness that day.

However, last night the boyfriend was telling me the horrible stories of how moon bears’ bile are being harvest for the use of traditional Chinese medicine. I’ve got to read it and see the photos for myself and when i did i couldn’t begin to tell you how it affected me.

I read of  how cruel the bears are treated – being incarcerated (some since baby) in cages too small that they could not move for years and years, how the confinement caused stunted growth in some cases, how the dirty catheters inserted to extract bile in their abdomen gets infected and causes multiple organ failures which the bear have to endure for years till they die, how their paws are chopped off to prevent them from scratching out the catheters, how diseased the bears have become which made them blind, brain damaged, violent even. Bears in painful custom metal jackets designed to protect the dirty latex contraption for extraction of bile.

How could someone be so cruel?  Do they not have a conscious?

Come on, look at them!

The boyfriend and i gave a small donation for the cause last night and i felt better that we did something. We decided to sponsor a bear next year after the pay raise. It’ll be about USD45 (approx. RM154) per month which is a bit costly but we are thinking about it or at least we’ll befriend a bear for a mere USD80 (approx. RM274) per year. It’s really cool because you get annual photos and updates on your bear. It’s like owning one.

Going through the website again today i found a page at the Gift Shop where you can choose specific gifts for the bears such as food (pots of honey, tub of raisins, fruit baskets), toys (hammock, swings, etc)  and medical services (vet care, health check, etc).

It’s really sweet actually and i think i’ll buy a pot of honey for a special bear this Christmas. It just cost USD8.00 per pot to make a bear happy for the festive season. Plus they’ll send you a nice card. It’ll do as a nice and thoughtful gift to someone to be donated on behalf on and it’ll be a great way to educate the kids.

By the way, if you’re wondering, this is not a paid post or anything. I’m just really passionate about animals. Although not passionate enough to be an activist but i like to do my part. I believe that if you have the means then you should give some to charity, if not for animals then for other unfortunate souls out there.

Knowing that, i think i could sleep a bit better tonight.

Choco Takes A Bath & Doodle Wants a Home

After 5 years of living in dirt and saliva, stinky Choco finally have his bath.

Help help i’m drowning

I love Choco. It’s a gift from me to myself 5 years ago. I’ve been hugging it to sleep ever since. Now it’s accompanied by my Moo pillow (a gift from Mr. Bf).

Anyways, i’m very happy to report that Doodle is doing great. Her wound is almost completely healed. She’s super duper naughty active and always trying to stand up which of course she can’t since both her hind legs had been fractured.

Will you take me home?

This weekend she should be ready for her surgery to insert metal pins in her legs. Then it’s 2 more weeks of healing. I’m almost 100% positive that she can walk with all four legs after that. She’s a fighter.

I’m very happy that quite a few readers and friends had been concerned and had been asking about Doodle. Alan had even offered a donation (the expenses of taking care of another pup is killing me.

Alan: I’ve email to you twice lar… think my email not working or had my email went into the spam mail?.

Pin had helped me to post the adoption poster on his blog. Thank you all.

So, who wants to adopt Doodle after she’s healed? Come on. Be a good samaritan.

Dilemma

I’m in a dilemma. Here’s the situation.

1)
Let say you saw a pitiful puppy in a tiny box, in front of a shop. She’s tiny. Maybe about 1 month plus of age. One of her hind leg is swollen and bleeding. Obviously, she was run over by a vehicle. She can’t move it and is in pain. She lies there in her urine coz she can’t move away.

Even worst, you found out from the shop owner that the pup was dumped in front of her shop in a black rubbish bag. The shop owner feeds it but refuses to take her to a vet.

Nevertheless, she’s active and happy to see you. She licks you and seems to be healthy apart from her injury.

What would you have done?

a) Leave her there to suffer.
b) Take her to the vet and take her into your home.
c) Take her to the vet and leave her there but try to find her a good home.

2)
Let say you selected option c).
Now, you took her to the vet. The vet held her up and there’s blood practically oozing out from her wound. The bone was poking out from the skin.

The vet told you that the pup has a bone fracture (there is possibility of her having more than one fracture) and her wound has internal infections. But he also confirms that she is quite healthy apart from the fracture.

Her X-ray might reveal more than one fracture which means she needs to go for surgery. It’ll cost approx. RM400 per fracture (after discount coz she’s a stray).

Vet gave you an ultimatum.

a) Euthanasia (put her to sleep)
b) Go through all the process of X-ray and surgery.

What’s your decision?

.
.
.

At times, i wonder why do i always stumble upon such situations. Is god testing me whether i’m a kind hearted person? (Have i not proven it more than enough?) Or, is god trying to tell me to mind my own business?

Next time i walk, i’ll look at the clouds for directions instead of the road. I might be more successful.
