Getting All Excited Over Tintin

Getting All Excited Over Tintin

My first contact with Tintin was way back in primary school. I was what, perhaps in Standard 4 or 5 when i happened to pick up a crumpled, dog eared comic with colorful pictures. It probably wasn’t in as bad condition as i remembered because you know how memory tends to exaggerate. However it was missing a pages or two and a vintage, made of the old school newsprint instead of the type of glossy paper used in comics today; that i am sure.

At that time my school was having a reading program where a certain time slot is placed before the school assembly started. Everyone must sit on the hall’s floor with a book to read. Well, most of us just opened the text book on our lap and stared into space waiting for the 30 minutes to pass. For those looking for a more creative outlet, in front of the hall next to the piano there was a battered wooden book case that actually flips open like a book. In it were books that had seen better days. That’s where i found my treasure.

I might have mindlessly stashed it in my school bag after the bell rang or i might have stolen it (come on the books in there ends up in the trash sooner or later anyways) but i only recall finding it again back at home. I have faint memories of Egyptian mummies and balls of fire so i’m pretty sure it was Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Seven Crystal Balls. I read and re-read the thin comic and enjoyed every minute of it even though at that age i didn’t understand the themed political propaganda of Tintin stories.

But soon i found other exciting things to do and i hid it in the back of the drawer and forgot all about it. That’s when i lost my treasure; i never found it again.

That will make it to the “Most regrettable things i’ve done” list because the battered Tintin would be worth a lot now but mostly because it’s one of my favorite comics. Instead i have to settle for the new hardcover collection like everyone else. The story of Tintin with his sidekick, Snowy is the same but somehow the feeling is muted without the newsprint material. Like what the hiking guide keep saying to us in Chiang Mai “Same, same but different”.

tintin

Just the same it’s hard not to be excited knowing the movie is screening soon in Malaysia. Watching Tintin and Snowy running around the globe getting into trouble and kicking some bad villain’s arse and Captain Haddock’s totally unorthodox cursing especially “Blue Blistering Barnacles!” is just too fun. It’s like being a kid again.

Trailer: The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn.

Get Wowed by Real Steel!

Get Wowed by Real Steel!

First the synopsis from IMDb.

“Set in the near future, where robot boxing is a top sport, a struggling promoter feels he’s found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.”

Much anticipation had been placed on this movie especially when everyone in my circle had highly recommended it. And i pretty much enjoyed the entire show.

The plot borderlines corny with some cheesy scenes i could go without but the good performance by the casts more than made up for it. Evangeline Lilly and Hugh Jackman gave a genuine and endearing performance (ok not so much Jackman but Lilly and him is really good to look at) and Dakota Goyo who plays the cute yet street-smart son is very impressive. He’s a force to look out for, this kid.

Loved the robot hero, Atom. Compared to the other almost monstrous robots in the arena, Atom looks like a beaten metal scrap but it’s easy to grow fond of him and every time Atom fights you just can’t help but cross your finger and hope he pulls through.

And oh, can he dance!

It would be awesome if i have a personal robot like him.

Mostly i was blown away by the sensational robots and the excellent CGI. I was so caught up with the robot boxing matches that i actually wanted to stand up to cheer and jeer. The sound effects were incredible. Wham! Wham! Wham! So realistic it was that i winced more than once watching the robots tearing up each other.

By the end of the fight my adrenaline was pumping and i was flushed. It was that cool!

If you haven’t watched it then you are missing out; perhaps not for the sentimentality of the father and son relationship but for the spectacular metal clanging on metal fights.

Contagion

Contagion

I’m pretty surprised that Contagion actually earned rather positive reviews from many.

On the other hand, it was such a boring experience for me. The movie is not what we actually call action-packed. In fact, it is very slow-paced, not exactly the kind of heart-thumping, nerve-wrecking, dramatic kind of movie that i would have expected considering Contagion is about the outbreak of epidemic (i think the correct term should be pandemic instead) worldwide and the effects on ordinary people as they struggle to stay alive – you know panic, confusion, hysteria and all those stuffs.

The star-studded production didn’t do the magic. There are just too many leading characters, too many tales to tell and too little time. Spells weak character development to me.

Gwyneth Paltrow appeared only in the first quarter of the movie; she was the one whom contracted the disease in the first place and few scenes into the movie she collapsed with severe seizures and died – erm i apologize for the spoiler. Matt Damon plays the husband who coincidentally is immune to the disease but struggles to keep her daughter safe (his son also died from the disease). I expected a more grieve-stricken and compelling character for someone who had lost his wife and son and is perhaps on the brink of losing his daughter but instead the character failed to make an impact.

Marion Cotillard plays an epidemiologist traveled to Hong Kong to find out where the sickness originated then got kidnapped to exchange for vaccines. Again, no impact; we only get a sketchy version of the character. What i waste, i love Cottilard.

While this could have been a poignant movie, it did nothing but droned on monotonously with too much focus on the leading cast instead of emphasizing on the reaction of the citizen at risk.

All the while the government is trying to keep the citizen under control and come out with the vaccine, people begin to panic, they thrash the supermarket, they rob the shops, and they become paranoid. But instead of building up on the fear and distress, we see Kate Winslet’s scene after scene of dull but endless plight to quarantine the infected areas.

Also occupying too much unnecessary screen time is Jude Law. Remind me of never buying tickets to any movie with Jude Law in it… besides Sherlock Holmes that is. He was atrocious and extremely annoying in the movie that kind of makes me want to stand up and leave the cineplex.

Pirates Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides

Pirates Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides

Ever a sucker for Johnny Depp’s movies especially the pirates series, it was a really long wait since At World’s End. Of course as a fan i feel it is my utmost duty to grab the tickets on the first day of the screening.

I brought my jacket in case it got cold in the cineplex. I was actually torn between the thicker jacket so i would be cozy throughout the movie or the thinner jacket because i am 100% sure the cineplex will be packed with people so there’ll be enough body heat to mute the air-conditioning. Everyone with the right mind loves Pirates Caribbean right?!

Anyhow, i also bought bottles of water in case i got thirsty. I went to the ladies so i won’t have to make a run in the middle of the movie. I was comfortably prepared for a 2 hour 17 mins of blissful adventure.

Yet, when the credit rolled i was puzzled.

I don’t know if i enjoyed the movie. I don’t know if i even like the movie.

But how can?!! It’s Pirates of Caribbean!!! It’s Johnny friggin’ Depp!!!!

But, but, but… uh… i don’t get the story. It’s so pointless. There were too much yapping. Believe it or not i actually think Johnny Depp has too much screen time!

There’s no actual heart-beat-stopping action and i prefer the Black Pearl more than The Queens Anne Revenge.

I find it ridiculous that the Spanish fleet actually went through all the trouble to locate the fountain of youth just to destroy it instead of claiming it as their own. Come on, it’s a bit far fetch isn’t it?

It was like a comedy more than an action/adventure movie. The scene where Penelope Cruise says she’s pregnant was ironic because she actually had a bun in the oven in real life but it wasn’t even funny.

Still it’s Pirates Caribbean and Geoffrey Rush (Captain Barbosa) never fails me and, and the mermaids were hot and it wasn’t bad just doesn’t live up to the last 3 sequel.

I’ve decided that if anyone asks me whether the movie is of any good i’ll tell them it was fantastic just because i’m a diehard fan and diehard fans remain loyal to the end.

Affectionate or Craziness

Since Kobe came into my life i’ve become such a cry baby Mother Theresa and at the same time a sadistic RAGE machine. Serious.

I see stray dogs wondering the streets, i want to cry and i so, so want to take them all home. I see an abandoned and injured animal, i want to nurse it back to health and find it a home. I see a turd head treating his pet like shit (forgive my RAGE mode language), i so want to stick pins in the bastard’s eyeball, disembowel him and leave him to DIE a dozen horrible deaths. May he rot in hell.

I just realized that the boyfriend and i had become an animal rescue team of some sort. We rescued about half a dozen dogs already and just last weekend we even managed to rescue a tortoise. Some asshole drove all the way to Desa ParkCity, stopped his car and left his pet tortoise on the roadside.

OMFG what a dick head. These people have no conscience.

Don’t these people realize that animals have feelings too. They should be sent to prison for committing such atrocity and made to watch Hachiko repeatedly until it gets through their thick little skull how loyal pets could be.

Sigh…

Speaking of Hachiko, omg it’s like the saddest movie i’ve ever watched. I don’t remember any movie that made me i cry so terribly. It’s just so, so sad and by the end of the movie my eyes were all puffy, my nose stuck, my face wet with tears and i was sobbing uncontrollably. Worst, when i look next to me wanting the boyfriend to comfort me, i saw another red sobbing face staring back at me. He was crying even worse than me. Ah, FML.

And today dad was watching the same DVD at home. I went into the room because i didn’t want to watch it a second time. Yet, i could hear the background music and i was in tears. I’m so traumatized.

Is there such things as OverAffectionateTowardsAnimalDisorder? I’ll be the president.

UP, UP and Away

UP, UP and Away

There you go, the Black Eyed Peas concert is now open to EVERYBODY. Muslim people are welcome. *shake heads* It still doesn’t make sense for Arthur’s Day to be without the alcohol.
.
.
.
UP was really superb. Just when i thought Pixar would have run out of good stories by now, UP comes along and made me cry. Serious, it’s a tearjerker.

up

I don’t mind going without the talking dogs, which was kind of lame but the story line is really touching. I cried in both scenes when old Mr. Fredrickson ‘s wife past away and another when he reminisce the times when he was with his wife. Awww… I wish my partner and i would be so loving when we are old and wrinkly.

Sweet heartwarming one from Pixar :) and oh be in the cinema early to catch the short Pixar film called “Partly Cloudy”. Super adorable!

Here it is if you missed it.

CloudWatch today’s top amazing videos here

And here is the link to the Partly Cloudy’s full story.
.
.
.
Been feeling rather down for the fast week. I’m not sure why but i feel stressed over everything and life have been very mundane lately.

I think the haze is coming again too because my eyes are starting to water and itch again and my nasal passage is blocked for the past few nights. I’m a miserable creature.

I’m feeling super anti-social too if it’s anymore possible to be more anti-social than i already am that is. Ah… i need to soak in a nice hot bath, eye drops and a long, long nap. Maybe i’ll wake up next month.

Before that i think i’m going to watch Partly Cloudy again and again to cheer myself up.

And So, it was Angels & Demons

And So, it was Angels & Demons

So, another outdated post again.

So, finally there are some movies worth watching on the cinema again. Thank god! It’s like seasonal isn’t it? There’s a season of really bad movies and then there’s the season (now) where all the exciting movies will play back-to-back on screen. Go figure. I shall think that the next few weeks will be spent haunting the cineplex. Wtf i have no life.

So, last weekend we managed to grab tickets for Angels & Demons which was a miracle because KidCheng reserved 4 tickets for us via online but she forgot to pick the seats… yeah like wtf right? Who would go through the trouble booking a ticket but not pick the seats right?

So, instead of going all the way to the cineplex and ending up seating on the front row (trust me, i’ve been there and it was awful), and because i’m really smart, i sent KidCheng and McBun all the way there to check first. Ah ha! I told you i’m smart right?! And because i’ve got brains (don’t roll your eyes, i could go on forever), we got to select really good seats. The cinema was really crowded you know.

angels-demons-poster-2

So, Angels & Demons was awesome… ok, not really that awesome coz i think the book is way much better. I’m a Dan Brown fan – i read all his books ok. His a genius. I wish i could come up with twists and turns in a story like him. Anyway, A&D was much, much better than Da Vinci Code. I read the book ages ago and i kind of only remember only bits and pieces of the story which is a good thing coz the expectation is less. But the movie would have been better if it focused more on the torturing of the 4 preferatis as in the book. The torturing scene should have gotten more on-screen time. It would have made a bigger impact don’t you agree? I am a sadist. I love horror. Wtf.

Nah, the summary:-

Despite his notorious relationship with the Church, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is once again called upon to decipher the clues to a catastrophic conspiracy. The Pope has died, and before conclave can begin to determine his successor, the four preferitti (primary hopefuls for the papacy) are kidnapped. An ominous threat of their hourly demise, along with the complete annihilation of Vatican City, is issued as an elaborate revenge scheme for a persecuted group known as the Illuminati. With their meager time limit steadily counting down, Langdon, accompanied by beautiful physicist Vittoria Vetra, must travel throughout Rome to unravel the carefully hidden signs that will lead them to a terrifying adversary, a harrowing discovery, and the shocking truth.

So, like what i told everyone who watched Da Vinci Code, Tom Hanks so doesn’t look like a Professor Langdon. I always envisioned Professor Langdon looking more like the Aragorn guy in Lord of the Ring… what’s his name again? Yes, Viggo Mortensen. He’ll make a more convincing professor. Handsome too :P.

Come on, who would you choose?

So, Ewan McGregor really shouldn’t act. Unless it’s a comedy. He is so unconvincing as the Camerlengo ok. Everyone could have guessed he was the villain even from the beginning. Omg, i can’t forget the scene where he framed Commander Richter and branded his own hairy chest with the burning iron. It was so fake i couldn’t help laughing in the cinema. Mcgregor should stick to road trips and travel writing.

So, i am like so in love with Pierfrancesco Favino (Inspector Olivetti in A&D). I was like “Shit! Why he get killed so fast?!!!” when he got shot. Italian guys are so dreamy. Geez… which reminds me of the Italian couple that went tracking with us at Chiang Mai. The guy was so… *drool*.

pierfrancesco_favino

So, if i’m a lesbian i would express my undying love to Ayelet Zurer. She’s so gorgeous. Lucky Tom Hanks. But i’m not a lesbian, so i’ll just stay contented being envious of her gorgeousness. I can’t believe she’s 40! I wanna look like that when i hit 40.

These should go on my wall for inspiration. LOL.

Landmark Theatre

So, Angels & Demons is an enjoyable thriller.
So, go watch it if you haven’t.
So, now there’s Night at the Museum 2, Alien Vs. Monster, Terminator (i just want to watch Christian Bale ok), Transformer, Harry Porter and i forgot what to look forward to. I think i’ll go rent a camping spot at the cineplex.
