Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs

It’s funny how a person could be even more famous and appreciated after they have passed on. Odd but that’s how the world works. I’ve read more than my share of articles in these 2 days and now know more about Steve Job than i had before.

I’m not an Apple user, never own an Apple in my life because i’m always the one wanting to be different so i wouldn’t be caught dead owning an iPhone or iPad. That doesn’t mean i’m not tempted by the sleek designs and the works, oh yes, i’ve always secretly wanted one.

So here’s to Steve Jobs who tantalized and tempted the people worldwide. May you R.I.P.

Oh, and i’m really glad for Pixar. That i’m a fan.

Ring of Fire

Tonight i have a wedding dinner to attend to. It’s to celebrate the union of one of my good friend and her wonderful other half. They have been together for since i remember, it’s about time these inseparable love birds tie the knot. I wish her all the best and may the happy couple have a long and loving live together!

On another note, it feels kind of wrong to be celebrating at a devastating time like this. Japan had been hit by a 8.9 magnitude earthquake (one of the worst earthquake recorded in history) yesterday afternoon. The earthquake and 10 feet tsunami had caused destruction like i could never possibly imagine. Though the actual death toll have not been counted for, it’s not a figure i look forward to learn. Seeing the video footage of the disaster is heart breaking. Seeing Japan, a country so modern and advance swept away just like that is more than unnerving.

The disaster that struct Japan this time is on a league of it’s own. With a nuclear reactor sitting in the earthquake zone, i’m afraid the worst is not over. Already there are warnings about radiation leak causing mass evacuation. I’ll be constantly monitoring the news for updates. Let’s hope it’s all under control.

Sigh, it seems like it’s disaster after disaster after another disaster isn’t it? I might be skeptical about the Mayan prediction before but right now i’m almost a believer. It might not happen on 2012, but damnit it does feel like the world is ending soon. With the earth plate shifting so drastically fast (i read somewhere saying that the earthquake in Japan had caused sped up the earth rotation by 1.6 microseconds), perhaps we’ll live to see a new continent formed, who knows…

Citizen of Japan, stay strong. We will be praying for you. God bless.

Citizen of the world, constant vigilance.

Stain and Poison

Watching these 2 short clip really broke my heart and made me teared up.

Raise awareness. Save the moon bears… use alternative medicine!

Stain – the title of the first 60-second announcement, produced in Mandarin and English, likens the intelligence of moon bears to that of a child and calls for empathy from viewers to support Animals Asia in their campaign to end bear farming. This message is intended to raise awareness of the plight of these beautiful bears, and will be distributed across Asia.

Poison – this second announcement is targeted at users that consume bear bile and highlights the potential health risks of taking bile that is contaminated. This has also been produced in Mandarin and English and has already been launched in China.

Viva Spain, Too Bad Netherlands and a Happy Anniversary to us

Viva Spain, Too Bad Netherlands and a Happy Anniversary to us

That’s a real long title LOL.

I can’t believe that World Cup is over. Just when i was getting started to enjoy the whole celebration.

I have to admit it’s more then 11 people chasing after a ball, World Cup is about victory, defeat and the whole world coming together to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, the cultural difference and the unity behind the game itself.

Wow, now i can’t believe i said that! But well, that’s how i come to understand the World Cup anyways.

I surprised even myself by staying up and watching the last few matches and learned a few stuff about football after all these years. I spotted offsides all by myself too. Impressive given my standard of footie knowledge before this is next to a big zero.

I’m happy that Spain won eventhough i supported Netherlands. I have a thing for underdogs and a thing for orange clogs :P. But Spain clearly played with more grace and skills (and clearly less rough judging from the amount of yellow card the orange team collected) so i guess everyone is happy except for the Dutch. Better luck next time in Brazil.

As for Paul the octopus cum oracle, i’m giving him a chance. Heck, i’m even giving his entire family tree a chance just for a while – i’m not having fried squid anytime soon i think). I heard Paul is 2 years old which is supposed to be quite old for a octopus. Don’t think we’ll see his tentacles in the next World Cup, thank god.

I digress for just a little.

The World Cup finals was on the same day as our 4th anniversary.

You know what, we don’t go all out for anniversaries or birthdays or any other occasions anymore. I think age and comfort had gotten in the way. I remember a time when we used to get gifts, plan where to dine and i would have a long blog post declaring my undying love or something in that essence. Haha.

Plain laziness. Haha.

This year we agreed to have a quiet dinner at Jarrod & Rawlins at Ampwalk.

The atmosphere was great. We had our privacy and the food? Fantastic.

“Happy Anniversary b!”

You know what? I’m even planning to get married on 11th July because that means we’ll have less dates to remember. But mostly it means in the future he’ll have one date less to remember and i’ll have one less excuse to burn him *slaps forehead*

Germany 0 – Spain 1

Germany 0 - Spain 1

Meet the World Cup so-called oracle, octopus Paul.

and now meet the frying pan.

There’s where i’m wishing Paul is sitting right now. Frying.

Why is everyone a Spanish fan??! Am i the only one who rooted for Germany?

If Paul doesn’t predict Netherlands winning the cup at finals this year, i’m going out to have fried squid for supper.

Anyone know where to get sotong goreng so late at night?

Have you heard about the arson attacks on 3 churches in Klang Valley? No doubt over the latest and much conflicted dispute on the use of the word ”Allah” by non-Muslims.

Sigh… what the hell is wrong with these people??!!!

Here (taken from http://www.nytimes.com/).

3 Malaysian Churches Attacked in ‘Allah’ Dispute

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Assailants attacked three Malaysian churches with firebombs Friday, extensively damaging one amid a growing conflict over the use of the word ”Allah” by non-Muslims, officials said.

The attacks sharply escalated tensions in the Muslim-majority country ahead of planned protests by Muslims later Friday against a Kuala Lumpur High Court verdict which struck down a 3-year-old ban on non-Muslims using ”Allah” in their literature.

”I condemn these actions because they will destroy our country’s harmony,” Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters. ”The government will take whatever steps it can to prevent such acts.”

Najib said he has told the national police chief to step up security at churches and other places of worship.

The Dec. 31 court decision incensed many Muslims, who see it as a threat to their religion. Hateful comments and threats against Christians have been posted widely on the Internet, but this is the first time the controversy has turned destructive.

The ruling was on a petition by Malaysia’s Roman Catholic Church, whose main publication, the Herald, uses the word Allah in its Malay-language edition.

The first-floor office in the three-story Metro Tabernacle Church was destroyed in a blaze a little after midnight, said Kevin Ang, a spokesman for the Protestant church. The worship areas on the upper two floors were undamaged and there were no injuries.

Kuala Lumpur police Chief Mohamad Sabtu Osman told The Associated Press that a witness saw four people on two motorcycles breaking the glass front of the church and throwing an incendiary object inside before fleeing.

He said police found a wrench, an empty gasoline can and two scorched motorcycle helmets at the scene. The church occupies a corner plot in a row of shops in Desa Melawati, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur.

”We are still investigating,” he said. He also urged Muslims not to participate in the planned protests.

Separately, Molotov cocktails were thrown into the compounds of two other churches before dawn, causing minor damage in one and none in the other, church officials said.

The Rev. Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the Herald, said many churches have employed extra security guards. ”Most churches are taking precautions. They are aware it may just blow up,” he said.

The government has appealed the court verdict and the High Court has suspended its decision’s implementation until the appeal is heard.

Muslims argue that ”Allah” is exclusive to Islam, and its use by Christians would confuse Muslims and tempt them to convert to Christianity.

About 60 percent of Malaysia’s 28 million people are Malay Muslims, while the rest are ethnic Chinese, Indians and indigenous tribes. The minorities follow Christianity, Hinduism and other religions.

The Malay-speaking indigenous tribespeople, living in remote states of Sabah and Sarawak, are the main readers of the Herald’s Malay-language edition. Catholic officials say ”Allah” is the only word they know for God.

Many Muslims in Malaysia have refused to accept the argument that ”Allah” is an Arabic word that predates Islam, and that it is used by Christians in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Indonesia regularly in their worship.

The backlash against the court verdict has reinforced complaints by minorities that they face institutional discrimination by the government.

On Thursday, the Malaysian judiciary’s Web site was hacked and defaced with an apparent threat to Christians, The Star newspaper reported. The site, however, appeared to be normal on Friday.

The Star said the hacker, using the alias ”Brainwash,” defaced the site with a banner saying: ”Mess with the best, die like the rest” and ”Allah only restricted to Muslim only.”

Gifts with Meaning

Gifts with Meaning

The general perception of bears is they are cute and cuddly. Yes, they could be dangerous and could possibly kill you in a brutal attack but we still think they are warm and adorable creatures which they really are if we are not so stupid to provoke them.

But of course we know that and the general perception that the bears are big snuggly animals that’s nice to hug is still intact. This goes to explain the dozens of teddy bear soft toys in our bedroom. We love teddy bears. We can’t resist them. We buy teddy merchandises. We longed for the big huge life size teddy by the shop window of Memory Lane.

You know, i’m extremely tired and barely able to get up today. The boyfriend and i spent the night going through animalasia.org looking at photos after photos of the poor adorable moon bears.

Have you heard of the Moon Bears plight? It’s been going on since 1995 and i am surprise at myself for not being aware of it (being the self professed animal lover and all). I actually came across the founder’s blog long before when i was reading about the culling of dogs in China but didn’t have the guts to go though the posts afraid i might bawl like a baby (because i’m a champion cry baby). I really did not need another sad story in my conciseness that day.

However, last night the boyfriend was telling me the horrible stories of how moon bears’ bile are being harvest for the use of traditional Chinese medicine. I’ve got to read it and see the photos for myself and when i did i couldn’t begin to tell you how it affected me.

I read of  how cruel the bears are treated – being incarcerated (some since baby) in cages too small that they could not move for years and years, how the confinement caused stunted growth in some cases, how the dirty catheters inserted to extract bile in their abdomen gets infected and causes multiple organ failures which the bear have to endure for years till they die, how their paws are chopped off to prevent them from scratching out the catheters, how diseased the bears have become which made them blind, brain damaged, violent even. Bears in painful custom metal jackets designed to protect the dirty latex contraption for extraction of bile.

How could someone be so cruel?  Do they not have a conscious?

Come on, look at them!

The boyfriend and i gave a small donation for the cause last night and i felt better that we did something. We decided to sponsor a bear next year after the pay raise. It’ll be about USD45 (approx. RM154) per month which is a bit costly but we are thinking about it or at least we’ll befriend a bear for a mere USD80 (approx. RM274) per year. It’s really cool because you get annual photos and updates on your bear. It’s like owning one.

Going through the website again today i found a page at the Gift Shop where you can choose specific gifts for the bears such as food (pots of honey, tub of raisins, fruit baskets), toys (hammock, swings, etc)  and medical services (vet care, health check, etc).

It’s really sweet actually and i think i’ll buy a pot of honey for a special bear this Christmas. It just cost USD8.00 per pot to make a bear happy for the festive season. Plus they’ll send you a nice card. It’ll do as a nice and thoughtful gift to someone to be donated on behalf on and it’ll be a great way to educate the kids.

By the way, if you’re wondering, this is not a paid post or anything. I’m just really passionate about animals. Although not passionate enough to be an activist but i like to do my part. I believe that if you have the means then you should give some to charity, if not for animals then for other unfortunate souls out there.

Knowing that, i think i could sleep a bit better tonight.
