Donkey, carrot and the stick

Donkey, carrot and the stick

Have you heard of the idiom, the “carrot and stick”? It’s about reward and punishment that encourages us to push forward.

The main and most known story goes like this. The driver would dangle a carrot on a long stick in front of a donkey making sure it’s always out of reach. The donkey would move forward to reach the carrot, therefore pulling the cart.

My favorite interpretation is however, the driver would dangle a carrot to drive the donkey. The donkey move forward and is awarded a nibble. Else, there is a back-up stick hidden in the cart and the donkey ends up with a sorry arse (pun not intended).

Some people would need the carrot to survive in the world.
For some, both carrot and the stick must comes in a package.
Some people would need only the stick.
