Excuse Me, While I…

I can’t believe it but i think i’m getting tired of technology. I really am. You know there was a time when i don’t have to worry about backing everything up before i go to sleep. I miss the time when all i needed to is just chuck and dump everything into the drawer and that’s about it. Now, i practically need to make back-up of EVERYTHING. My blogs, my photos, my HDD, my emails and just about everything else or risk losing everything when the HDD or the server decides it’s time to remind us of our bad karma by threatening a permanent retreat. Is it me or is everybody else’s data is evil working against its maker?

Now excuse me while i make back-up of my undergarments. Just in case… maybe i’ll make daily back-ups instead of weekly ones… i wouldn’t want to wake up stark naked.

Remember when we used to have bulky, huge photo albums that we collected like treasures? Remember the pile of photo (film) negatives that we didn’t know what to do with but occasionally it stood its purpose because some friend of yours will come running to you saying they had lost the photo and needed the negatives to develop a new set? Ahhh… that was the good ol’ days. Every few months the photo album gets more crowded and every few months my number of albums increased. I had so many, i had to transfer all of the photos to really huge albums. I had 4 huge albums.

I still have 4 huge albums amidst the spider webs and a few dozen folders full of photo memories in my C drive. I could develop the photos into physical ones but the idea of deleting it from my C drive terrifies me. What if my laptop caught fire? Everything would be lost. So now i have to pay to upload all the photos into an online gallery like Flickr or Shutterfly. It’s USD20++ (RM60++) per year. Not that i’m a miser but inflation is high and i’m getting poor. Just think about it. Besides the bills, there’s monthly insurance payment, car installment, house installment, magazine subscription installment, gym installment and whole lot of other installments. That’s only monthly. Now, as if we are not poor enough, we have to pay annual hosting fees, domain fees, storage fees, this fees and that fees.

Now excuse me while i break up the single piece of bread into 3 tiny pieces… for breakfast, lunch and dinner… oh, make it 6 pieces so i could have it for 2 days… i would need to extra cash for a back-up in case Flickr server have power failure.

Speaking of photo albums reminds me of the letters and cards i had gathered throughout the years. It’s all nicely kept in a box under my bed now. I used to enjoy receiving cards for festive seasons and especially birthday cards. It was personalized with (hopefully) sincere messages and touching words that brings back memories whenever i re-read it. Also, it was kind of nice receiving physical things i could hold with my hand for my birthday. At least i can call it a present from the stingy person who couldn’t have bothered to buy me a real present. And lets not forget about the long amusing letters we use to correspond among friends. I guess that’s all gone now. Now, we have emails and e-cards… that i will keep for a few days in my inbox… and delete after i get tired of seeing the long messy list of read mail in my inbox.

Now excuse me while i coerce and threaten my boyfriend to write me a physical love letter. At least i could burn it in fury if we ever break-up. I can’t burn my email… i could print out the love letter from my inbox and burn it… if i didn’t accidentally deleted the email.

It’s not like i’m an old crazy lady (i’m not even old ok) making a protest against technology. It’s just that i had better days without it. It wasn’t always that we have mp3 and iPods and all that stuff. I enjoy listening to the radio. It’s not so repetitive. I don’t even listen to CDs that much. I really don’t get it why some people have to listen to their favorite songs 24/7. Don’t they get tired of it? Somemore listen to outdated songs 24/7. Yes i know that you like Rihanna. Yes i know the ela ela ela song is a hit. No, i don’t think playing the same songs every single day at work is hip and hop and fine and dandy.

Now, excuse me while i hack into someone’s playlist, delete all the songs and upload some dull Buddhist chants… at least we could all get some sleep… amitabha.

Man, i could go on and on about these stuff but i can’t. I have to back-up my system before the night runs out.

Sigh… i’m really screwed.

e-Storage is Useless

My hosting provider had a power failure yesterday night. Thank god that they had back-up and the back-up survived. I would have committed suicide if everything is lost. I can’t imagine starting my travel blog from scratch. I once lost all my photos in my HDD and it made me want to die. Years and years of memories flushed down the black hole into oblivion.

I heard TM had come out with a new package called the ‘e-storage’. It’s supposed to work as a storage mine for those who wants a safe place to store their data or photo or video or whatever else locally. The thing is… the package is blardy useless just like everything else TM provides. Although it’s cheap; RM1 for 500MB and RM2 for 1GB for personal use, that’s as far as it gets. TM is only providing a maximum 1GB space for personal users and a maximum of 4GB (i think) for business users. What the hell are we going to do with an itsy bitsy 1GB?! Not even enough to store my one folder of pictures and i have like so, so many folders.

Oh well, that is why everyone is depending on servers and storage from far accross the globe such as Flickr and others.

I digress. Dad is having eye surgery tomorrow. It’s going to be a busy, busy day. Next week will be a busy, busy week. I need some Red Bull.
