Ok, a quick recap. I bought a domain name from godaddy.com 2 weeks ago. Yesterday i signed-up for a 2 year hosting plan with HostMonster only to find out that i’m not able to transfer my domain name to this new hosting platform.

Initially i bought the domain name from godaddy via Blogger (Google) with no intention of getting my own hosting. I was going to use Blogger’s free hosting. But i thought long and hard about it and made a decision to get my own hosting. Whenever i see everyone else having their own domain and making use of all the cool wordpress plug-ins, i go green with jealousy. I’m kiasu. *yeah i know :P

That explains why i’m unable to transfer the domain name from godaddy registrar to the new registrar. It’s a new domain that i bought without any hosting.

Apparently, there is a rule with domain name transfer. A domain name needs to be registered with a given registrar for at least 60 days. Meaning, once you purchase a domain you cannot transfer it to another registrar within the 60 days period. The same rule applies when you had successfully transfered it to another registrar but decide to transfer it to yet another registrar. It’s a no-go for at least 60 days. You can try but most probably your original registrar will have the domain locked down.

I found out about this rule from an online article about domain name transfer. Go have a look. I think it’s quite informative. Considering i don’t know shit about websites and web hosting but at least i got to know a little of something.

So now, i would have to wait another 40 plus days to be able to try transferring to HostMonster again. I hope nothing goes wrong by then.

Ps: Did you know that if you update your contact information at godaddy, your domain name will also be locked down for 60 days disregarding if it’s a newly purchase domain name or it’s been with godaddy for a long time. So be careful if you’re nearing the domain expiry date or else you’ll be force to renew it at godaddy or risk losing the domain.
